Winter starting this weekend in Idaho?

Quote from Idahostatesman:

“It’s going to be cold from here on out,” said Boise-based National Weather Service meteorologist Josh Smith. “Essentially, winter is here.”

My internal calendar as been seriously thrown off by living in Idaho. Winter used to start in October in Wisconsin. I always had to wear snow pants under my Halloween costume as a child. - Jane

ime to wax your skis and pull your long underwear out of the closet. Winter weather is on the way.

It’s a good thing. Tamarack Resort will open its lifts at 9 a.m. on Friday.

But before hitting the high country, homeowners should take some time Thursday to be sure their pipes and sprinkler systems are protected.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service said two winter storms will be blowing through Southwestern Idaho this weekend.

“It’s going to be cold from here on out,” said Boise-based National Weather Service meteorologist Josh Smith. “Essentially, winter is here.”

Before it gets cold and snowy on Friday, temperatures in the Treasure Valley will warm up to as high as 46 degrees.

But don’t be fooled.

The first storm, which originated in the Arctic, is expected to bring an inch of snow to the Treasure Valley and as much as 12 inches to the top at Bogus Basin on Friday night and Saturday morning.

As much as 18 inches of snow may fall in the west-central mountain areas above 6,000 to 7,000 feet. The Owyhees are expected to get a half-foot of snow.

Valley residents who still have furniture or other items outside should consider bringing them in Thursday. Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour are forecast for the Valley Friday night and early Saturday.

A second front coming off the Oregon Coast on Sunday is forecast to put a chill on the Valley, keeping temperatures below freezing through at least Wednesday.

The high temperature in the Boise area Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will be about 30 degrees. The high Wednesday is forecast to be 31 degrees.

Fall weather in the Boise area has been unseasonably warm.

Average temperatures for November were about 6 degrees above normal and average temperatures in October about 4 degrees above normal, Smith said.

The cold weather is a bummer. But at least we got some landscaping in!! This year was really unusual in how late winter arrived. As bummed at the skiers may have been, it was great for us!
